Shed Moving Cost Per Mile: Real 2026 Rates (Nobody Publishes These)
September 4, 2026 · MoveYourShed TeamShed Moving Cost Per Mile: Real 2026 Rates
Ask ten websites what it costs to move a shed and you'll get ten vague ranges. Almost none publish the number that actually drives long-distance pricing: the per-mile rate. Here it is.
The short answer
Most professional shed movers charge $3.00 – $6.00 per loaded mile for long-distance transport, on top of a base load/unload fee of $250 – $600 per end.
| Shed width | Typical per-mile rate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 8'6" (legal load) | $3.00 – $4.00/mi | No oversize permit needed |
| 8'6" – 12 ft | $4.00 – $5.00/mi | Oversize permit required in most states |
| Over 12 ft | $5.00 – $6.00+/mi | Permit + escort/pilot car in many states |
Why per-mile pricing isn't the whole quote
Per-mile only applies to the driving. A complete long-distance quote has four parts:
- Load fee — rigging the shed onto the trailer: $250–$600 depending on size and access
- Per-mile transport — the table above
- Permits — $15–$75 per state crossed (hauler pulls these)
- Escort car (wide loads) — $1.50–$2.50 per mile added to the transport rate when required
- Unload and set — $250–$600; leveling and blocking may add $100–$300
Worked example: 10x12 shed, 180 miles
- Load: $400
- Transport: 180 mi × $4.50 = $810
- State oversize permit: $45
- Unload and set: $400
- Total: ≈ $1,655 — right in line with the $1,200–$2,500 medium-shed state-move range
Local moves: the per-mile rate doesn't apply
Under roughly 40–75 miles, most haulers switch to flat-rate pricing because their costs are dominated by labor, not miles. A 10-mile move commonly costs the same as a 30-mile move — expect $300–$800 for a small shed locally.
How to get below the going rate
- Backhaul pricing. A hauler who just delivered near you and faces an empty drive home will often take your move at or below cost rather than deadhead. This is exactly what load boards surface — you post the job, and haulers already running your lane bid on it.
- Flexibility on dates. Midweek and off-season moves price lower.
- Do the site prep yourself. Cleared access and a ready pad cut the load/unload fees.
