Cost to Move a Shed to a New House or Another Property (2026)
September 4, 2026 · MoveYourShed TeamCost to Move a Shed to a New House or Another Property
Moving a shed between properties is the most common shed move there is — you're moving, the shed is coming with you, or you bought a used shed that needs to get to your yard. Here's what it costs in 2026 and what to watch for.
What it costs
Pricing follows standard shed-moving rates, driven by shed size and the distance between the two properties:
| Scenario | Small shed (8x8–8x12) | Medium (10x10–12x16) | Large (12x20+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same town (under 30 mi) | $300 – $800 | $500 – $1,200 | $1,000 – $2,500 |
| Same state (75–250 mi) | $800 – $1,800 | $1,200 – $2,500 | $2,000 – $4,500 |
| Long distance (250+ mi) | $1,500+ | $2,500+ | $4,000+ |
What makes property-to-property moves different
Unlike moving a shed across your own yard, a move to a new property involves two unfamiliar sites and often two sets of rules:
1. Access at both ends
The hauler needs room at the old property to load and at the new one to place. Before you book:
- Measure gate widths and overhead clearance at both properties
- Check for fences, AC units, septic lids, and soft ground along the path
- Photograph both sites — good haulers will quote from photos
2. The new pad has to be ready
The shed can't be set on bare wet ground. Gravel pads or blocks should be in place before delivery day, or you'll pay for a second trip. See our shed site preparation guide.
3. Permits at the destination
- Road permits for the transport itself (handled by the hauler on oversize loads)
- Placement/zoning rules at the new address — some municipalities require a permit or setback for any new accessory structure, even a used one you already owned. Check before the shed shows up.
4. Buying a used shed? Confirm it's movable
Not every shed can survive a move. Before paying for a used shed, check:
- Solid floor framing (rot at the skids is a dealbreaker)
- Screwed or nailed structural joints, not just stapled panels
- Overall size vs. your route — a 12-ft-wide shed through narrow rural roads can require escorts
Is it worth it vs. buying new?
For moves under ~75 miles, moving a quality shed almost always beats buying new — a new mid-range 10x12 runs $3,000–$6,000 installed, while moving your existing one typically costs under $1,500. We break down the full math in Is It Worth Moving a Shed?.
